Friday RoundUp: This Week's Top 3 Career Makers

It's Friday.  PHEW!  What a week.  I am not sure my weekends are less busy than the weeks because of all the kids' sporting events, but at least it is a different kind of busy!

Weekends are a great time to reflect - even as you drive around from event to event - and think about ways to improve your worklife and push your career forward.

If you have been following, you know that each Friday I highlight 3 career-makers.  I think it is easier to focus on ways to improve ourselves and our careers in small bites.

Here's this week's career makers:

1. When you receive a nasty-gram, sleep on it - it always looks better in the morning.

I 100% believe in being responsive.  Being responsive is a career-maker, without a doubt.  In fact, NOT being responsive is a career- killer.  Being responsive means responding within 2 hours if possible, no later than 8.

Except - and this is the only exception - when someone attacks you and is verbally abusive.  In this situation, you DO need to respond, but you need to buy time.  You need to acknowledge receipt of the email/text/vm but you need to say you are reviewing the information and will respond in a day.  Give yourself time to calm down, reflect, gather more info and then decide on the appropriate response.  Because, I guarantee, everything looks better the next day.

2. Ask yourself 3 important questions if you think it is time to leave

We all get bored at work.  What you need to figure out is if you are bored ALL THE TIME, if you no longer find meaning in your work and if you constantly imagine yourself doing something else.  If you are always wondering what else is out there - it is time to think about leaving...or at the very least, your next role within the same organization.

3. Think TWICE (or 5 times) Before Having a Workplace Affair

Sure, basketball players like Tristan Thompson may be able to get over being booed after cheating on a Kardashian (maybe) but it is a lot harder for you to rebuild your rep at work, especially if you are a woman.  I promise - people will talk and people will find out.  Make sure you understand the consequences (lost promotions, bad reputation, office slut) before giving in to the affair.
