Getting. Fired. Sucks.
Sure, you may have known it was coming. You may even WANT to be fired. You may actually HATE where you work. That's all fine and dandy. But when actually LEAVING the company isn't your choice - it still stinks. It is a minor blow to your ego. Leaving on your own terms is ever so much better. But sometimes, these things happen.
Actually, it is more than sometimes. Way back when, in a time long, long ago, companies employed people FOREVER. Getting fired really did suck. It just didn't happen. Now, companies constantly restructure, reorganize and the "contract" with employees has changed.
Letting people go happens. All. The. Time.
For some people - those that love the "high risk and high reward" environments, getting fired is the name of the game. For others, some companies manage their business by scaling up and then scaling down (e.g., firing employees) and then doing it all over again. Others just restructure to be more effective operationally. And some do it to cut costs.
The good news is that getting a job after being fired is not as hard as it used to be. In fact, it isn't hard at all. After 10 years of working with clients - and receiving 100% positive feedback - I've developed a solid approach to helping clients get back on their feet.
My approach involves 3 steps:
1. Rebuilding your confidence
...cause if you don't feel good about yourself, that lack of confidence will show. And employers want confident employees.
2. Practicing effective interview techniques
...acing interviews means delivering a blockbuster response, not babbling, choosing relevant examples to showcase your experience and making sure you explain why your experience will help that company
3. Learning how to answer those tough interview questions (like "why were you fired" and "what are your weaknesses")
...this is what I get the most questions on. And after we go through #1 and #2 above, these questions are no longer tough. It is important not to get tripped up during an interview. And I will show you how.
The combination of these 3 techniques has proven immensely successful for lots of people. Sometimes it just takes someone talking you through it to make you feel better and to remind you that you can do this.
And...to make it even EASIER for you to learn these techniques, I created a simple, online training course. In less than 30 minutes, you will:
1. Feel better about yourself
2. Learn how to use the STAR and BEL techniques to deliver effective interview answers
3. Learn to use these techniques to answer those tough interview questions.
Not everyone wants to work with a career counselor directly, and I get that. But so many of my clients have asked me if I have anything they can use on their own time. They love what they learn by working with me, and want to be able to take that forward on their own. So that's what I've created - a DIY interviewing tool.
I hope you are able to do the course and get the job you want. If you do it, I'd love to hear from you so you can let me know what you learned and how it went.
